Freelance Writing: Variety is the Spice of Life

Recently, I mentioned that I received an invitation to write for another technology website. The invite wasn’t a, “Hey Opal you’re in welcome aboard!” No that email was an invite to do a short writing sample. I have no problem with that. The site owner contacted me directly. I have to admit it felt great learning that he actually liked the technology samples I had submitted, and now I had done a writing test. This wasn’t something unfamiliar the writing test was explained in the application.

The websites writing style are different from how I normally write online, but it doesn’t mean I cannot do it. I can. I enjoy variety, and the difference within their writing style will insure that I’m not bored. Their writing style is sensational, outrageous, over the top. It’s a great hook and gets people commenting on their articles. The information within the posts is accurate. Since I had already studied their website before I heard back from him. I knew how I should write my sample. I picked a topic, thought about it, and let my fingers do the walking. I finally got the story how I liked it, and I submitted my writing sample. I also logged onto their website.

That’s when I faced a problem. Their website wasn’t there. Hmm, I wonder what’s going on? It looks as though their server is down. Guess what, their server was down for almost two days. When I logged on this morning, I found that they were up and running again, and they even posted a message explaining this issue. It seems as if they were having issues with their hosting provider. The good news is they’ve taken the steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Yes, they’ve created a backup plan. If their website should go down, they’ll have another backup website in place. Their readers aren’t left in the dark. That’s a smart idea. I immediately resent my writing sample hopefully I’ll be welcomed aboard their writing team.

I love variety. I imagine that is one of the reasons I have so many websites. I believe it’s good for us to come out of our comfort zones and try doing things differently. Some of my best work has happened when I tried a different approach. I like to switch things up now and again. This position is doing the same type of writing I’ve done for years it’s just adding a different flavor. I like that. It’s a great opportunity try something new and learn from others who do it well.

Sounds like an awesome opportunity :) I’m glad that the server is back up. Best of luck to you!

I agree….variety is important. Writing on one particular topic can become a bit boring and repetitive. For two years, I only wrote personal finance articles for a mortgage/loan company. Although I was familiar with the subject and enjoyed writing on the topic, after awhile I was like - NO MORE! I couldn’t find a fresh idea! I still write personal finance content, but I’ve expanded my niche and experimented with new topics.

RLD,
Thanks! I had to laugh here I was making sure I got it in on time and in the end I had to submit it a few days later because of their hosting issues.

Valencia,
Yes it can get boring. I switch up my writing. I write about a variety of topics throughout the day. That keeps it interesting. :-) When I had only one blog after a while, I became bored I wasn’t able to expand on some topics as I would have liked since my main website vegan momma covers a variety of topics.

Hi Opal - I must admit - I panicked as I was reading that. I thought you were going to say they’d disappeared completely. And I know how keen you are on this opportunity.

And what you say about getting out of your comfort zone is so true. Usually when you do it, you really enjoy the experience too.

Hi Opal, I panicked a little too! I thought you were also going to say they disappeared. I’ve heard of (and I almost got taken by) a scam where the writer was having everyone hand in samples. So I was going down those lines when you said they disappeared! I’m so relieved it worked out. And yes, I like the variety of this business, too.

Catherine,
My apologies I didn’t mean to make you panic. Next week I’m going to move to another location. I’m actually going to a cafe for a few hours.

Katherine,
Whoops my apologies, they are back stronger than ever. I got the job. :-) I’ve heard of those scams before but I didn’t think this was the case mainly because they have a strong presence on the internet. It was great to see them back online. :-)

yes i totally agree with your thinking.variety is must and should always be considered.
