Freelance Writing: My Daughter Writes…
This past holiday while I was visiting family I heard my father proudly tell my sister in laws grandfather, “My daughter writes!” He’s always been able to explain my business to people. He’ll say, “Opal creates and sells natural skin care products. She named her business after my granddaughter!” He’s always been remiss to add, “She also makes money online via adsense & affiliate marketing.” I think its due to the fact that he doesn’t completely understand it. To save himself of the possible questions that might arise he chooses not to mention it.
When I was around five years old, I would write stories specifically for my father. One Christmas I made a book and filled it with stories exclusively for him. He cherished that book. Of course, I made a copy for myself. We both still have our copies. As I became older I continued to write, but I didn’t share too many of my writings with him; however, now I do.
This past Christmas, one of the gifts I bought for my father was his own domain name. To me, it was a simple gift, but my goodness did he love using his own name for his email. I added it to one of my hosting packages and set him up with a lot of storage space. My parents receive a lot of pictures of their grandchildren from my brother and me. Currently I’m working on building a website for him that revolves around his children (my brother and me) and his grandchildren (my daughter and my brother and sister in laws son.)
Guess what? I’ve also started sending my father my articles. Sure he can read my websites, but I guess there is something special about seeing an article before I send it off. My dad eagerly awaits my sending him completed articles. I usually attach a note saying, “Hey dad! What do you think?” Although his responses are generally the same, “That’s good!” or “It’ll do” (he’s a man of few words) I know he likes the fact that I’m letting him read my work again and to be honest I’m enjoying it also.

Hi Opal - it is great that your dad takes an interest in what you do and promotes you positively to others.
Doing this for our children is one of the greatest gifts we can give them, as it really does boost their self confidence.
Catherine L,
I agree! I think he’s relieved that he can finally relate to what I do online. He even talks about writer’s strikes with me. I can tell he’s very happy for me. I try to do the same with my daughter. I’m always encouraging her. She loves it, and she has told me on many occasions that it makes her feel special.
