Freelance Writing: I’m Officially Booked
It’s been about six weeks since I started freelance writing, and now I can say that I’m booked. I cannot take on any more regular clients. Early this morning I heard about the technology writing job that I applied for. I was offered the position. Naturally I accepted. More on that in a later post.
Does that mean I’ll stop sending in ideas to magazines? No, In fact, this morning as my daughter and I were making our way to the store I thought of a great idea for an article. Funny thing I’ve never seen that angle used before in the magazine I’m going to query. Any guesses who’s going to work on a query letter and send it off this weekend?
I’m New To Freelance Writing, Not Writing
This past weekend I was chatting with my uncle who is a technical writer, and he commented on how quickly I had acquired work as a writer. I reminded him of that fact that I had already been writing for years in the corporate setting and I’ve always done my own writing. I’ve also been writing as a blogger. I’ve covered numerous topics as a blogger, and many of those articles have made their way into my writing samples. More important I received valuable feedback from the articles I’d written. Yes there are certain rules that I imagine you must follow as a freelance writer. Even though a few things have changed for the most part, I’m still the same writer I was before. Of course, I’m always working on enhancing my writing skills.
Opportunity Knocks
An opportunity fell into my lap yesterday. My main website vegan momma was contacted by a very well-known company with an interesting offer. The companies niche focuses on a topic I know a lot about. I write about it often. I’m honored that they took the time to contact me directly and am hoping that I have an opportunity to contribute in some way. Not only is the company known in the USA it’s known throughout the world. Why did they contact me? I’ve written about the topic numerous times. I’ve also written about their company. Perhaps I got their attention because of my writing? It’s possible.
There are some businesses, and people as well that actually keep track of online conversations about their company. I think it’s important to remember that. I’ve represented that company very well. I can think of a few developers who’ve stopped by my website simply because I talked about them. They found me through Google Alerts.
I’m Always Marketing
My writing projects didn’t just fall into my lap I’ve worked hard for them. In my case, I worked hard on my blogs. When I created my websites, I knew the impact they could potentially have if I marketed them correctly. I made sure I did a great job. Guess what? I still have a lot to learn but many of the mistakes I made on vegan momma I definitely won’t be making on addicted to writing.
I’m Learning a Lot
I’ve picked up a lot of great advice from fellow writers, books, and websites. I’ve also known that at times it’s ok to follow my instincts and do what I think would work best for me. Everyone is different what works for one person might not always work for others.
Regarding freelance writing I’ve noticed, for me, that most of the jobs that pay a lot aren’t advertised on the job boards. The jobs that have paid the most are the ones I have to look for. Does that give me an advantage? I think it might. How much did I make this month as a freelance writer? Well, let’s just say I surpassed December 2007’s earnings quite easily.

RLD,
Thank you, I’m not an expert but I can share what has worked for me. It might not work for someone else but perhaps they will get ideas. That’s one way I receive ideas listening or reading what others are doing.
Michele,
Yes, at times it takes a lot of work but it’s definitely worth it.
Valencia,
It has paid off. I wanted to see if I could book myself within the first month. It took a lot of work but I was able to accomplish that.

The Word Wrangler,
